This thread is about the article "Food Matters"
Baby Food Battles
Went to a cousins place who had a 7 month old baby. The entire conversation of my two hour visit was about baby food and allergies. My older cousin who was also with is and whose 'babies' are 24, and 22 felt that women spend too much time on something so basic, and natural.
I beg to differ. Our babies now face foods that are so GMO'd and an environment that is so toxic, that mom's need to worry about what goes into the little bellies.
My 'babies' are in their pre teens, but they went through a whole rash of food allergies, so I feel for my cousin and her 7 mo old.

We have had a discussion in this site about school lunches and feeding kids and food habits. Wanderlust, why are there so many more allergies now? I don't remember these allergies when we were growing up.
Food matters precisely for the reasons you mentioned, wanderlust. We have to equip our kids with the right immune system to battle the new and unheard of diseases that seem to be cropping up. How could babies be programmed to know all that, when they are entering a world that is constantly changing, (sometimes for the worse)?
About allergies, I read this nytimes article about how we are so eager to kill bacteria everywhere with hand sanitizers and such that microorganisms that were once resident and co-existed with our immune system are now completely foreign and fought against, resulting in allergies.

I think all of us sub-continental moms are conditioned to say eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat, eat at the sight of a baby. Poor kids..they grow up with this refrain ringing in their ears and it pops out as soon as they have kids. It is the great karmic cycle of our lives.
Guilty as charged Impedimenta. But there's a reason for it. I say eat eat eat eat (etc.) to my son at mealtimes because if I dont, he wont eat a proper meal and will snack on all sorts of inappropriate foods between mealtimes. So in my case, it seems to be eat eat eat at mealtimes and dont eat dont eat dont eat between mealtimes!
Michiko, evidence is pointing to the chemicals that surround us even in our own homes - flame retardant chemicals on couches, carpeting, pesticides on lawns, antibiotics in poultry and dairy, estrogen in water, 4-5 immunizations given on one doctor's visit, immunizations containing mercury as a preservative.
In children, there is a rising tide in allergies, asthma, diabetes and autism. These are all similar in the sense that structurally the body is fine - but the chemical and neural systems are misfiring causing a breakdown in the immune, lung, pancreatic and neurological capabilities respectively.
In older people you see a rising and early onset of cancer, parkinsons, ms, dementia. Again these are not structural but functional breakdowns.
We are overloaded, and our bodies are misfiring. And in this context, what we put in our babies mouths is really, really important.
